Well, we have some new numbers in from LimeBike (you can link to the article by clicking HERE). Not surprisingly, Reno locals and tourists alike actually have embraced bicycles and took 36,000 trips and racked up 35,000 miles in one month! So maybe this will be what it takes for everyone (Ahem...City of Reno and RTC) to get behind building a FULLY integrated, safe bicycle network in Reno. It was disappointing to see midtown shirk off real bike lanes in the planning process over the last few years. Hopefully, public statements like this from our Mayor will help swing the tide and not just be another talking point as our election cycle rolls around!

Pay to play parking...and you probably have the right tools to avoid it!
If you haven't heard, the city of Reno has a sorted history with parking meters. Only a few years ago, it was pretty much free parking in most places in Reno (unless you wanted to park in the downtown parking garage). With the tightening economy, they eventually put in parking meters on all the downtown spaces. Then they got fancy and wanted a smart system that could tell if a spot was being used and had local computer terminals.
Here's a picture of the former...and the later....which turned out not to work too well, and was scrapped at a rather large cost to the city.
Once the fancy system failed, they returned the old meters (which worked just fine) to some of the high traffic areas. However, we still hadn't spent enough $$$ messing around. They argued it was just too inconvenient to have to carry change to use a parking meter (the horror)! So, this week we got round three parking meters....basically the same thing we had originally, but they take credit cards.
While this is probably a really good solution, the city sure has wasted a ton of time and money to try to make money of downtown parking.
If you want to steer clear of the whole mess, just ride your bike. The parking is always free and almost always closer to your destination than if you drive! The other up side to all these new parking meters, is each one provides an additional free place to lock up your bicycle!

What to do in a "Pinch".
For the last few days I've been riding in along Mill Street. I don't know why.....I was a little late. It's shorter. I was on my road bike and it's fun to pass all the traffic backed up at lights. It's just the route I chose. It was all happy days until yesterday, just about as I was at the office. That's when I got the classic bike lane pinch. It happens a lot with "traditional" bike lanes at larger intersections (in this case Rock and Mill) and looks like this....
I was heading east on Mill St. at the time and the right turn lane was backed up a bit due to morning traffic.....just about to the location where the cars cross the dashed bike lane.
In the picture above I tried to show the problem area. The red is a car and the yellow dash is me. Start the scenario with at the far left.....this is where a large City of Reno truck towing a tank of asphalt (or thermoplastic) passes me, totally getting on the gas only to realize his right turn option is backed up almost crossing the bike lane.
Meaning he definitely saw me and knows I was there beside him (he was trying to pass). About 3-5 seconds later, at the center red circle and yellow line, he hasn't cleared me because he's now on the brakes. He still decides to come through me attempting to enter the right turn lane.
In response I slammed his passenger side door with my fist as hard as I can, because he's definitely not looking or thinking about me. He gets a clue and moves back into the primary right lane allowing me to ride through.
At the far right circle and line you can see he's now even with me at the red light. I told him he could have killed me! He tells me to fuck off and gives me the finger.
Nice guy! I hope he gets scalded by whatever was in the tank he was towing!
Here's an image to give you perspective from the google street view. I would have been on the left of the vehicle in the picture.
