Banff Mountain Film Festival.

Last night was the annual Banff Mountain Film festival put on by the Nevada Land Trust.  This year it was hosted at the Peppermill.  As always it was a great event with a lot of inspiring movies.  I'm sure there are about 1200 folks sitting at work this morning contemplating quitting their jobs and hiking, biking, or climbing until the $$$ run out....lord knows I am!

That being said...back in the day, the event was hosted at the Nugget.  We had 5 screens all this size, bigger vendor participation, and a huge raffle with seriously good prizes.  While the event is still a good show....the fun factor has diminished a bit.  Hopefully, this is just due to the shifting venue over the last few years and it will build back up to what it was.

The adventure begins Thursday, April 2nd at 7p.m. in the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are on sale now, through Pioneer Center (866-553-6605, pioneercenter.com, Pioneer Box Office, Monday - Friday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.) or REI: (775-828-9090).

General Admission is $22 in advance and $27 on the day of the event. There will be a pre-show exhibit event as well, beginning at 6:00 p.m., outside the showroom. Please note that the bar is CASH ONLY (ATM available).

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is Nevada Land Trust’s largest annual fundraiser, which has helped fund the protection of more than 42,000 acres to date. For more information, please call (775) 851-5180.

This year will be fun / different for me.  For years I've been involved with helping to pick the films we see and volunteering.  Due to a multitude of changes I'm just attending as a guest this year.  I have to say I'm actually looking forward to not knowing what we'll be seeing!

It’s hard for me to believe that the twelfth annual Truckee Meadows tour of the Banff Mountain Film Festival is rapidly approaching, and it will be here on Tuesday, March 26! This return engagement will once again be held in Sparks at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in the Rose Ballroom from 7-10 p.m.
One of the most amazing things about the Banff Mountain Film Festival is just how memorable the films are.  Some of them really stick with you-for years.  If you asked what my favorite Banff film is of all time - and it would be hard to give just one - I’d say it was a 1993 film about a family fishing with their cormorants on China’s Lijang River.  Since Nevada Land Trust made it onto the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour in 2002, it’s not uncommon during Banff season for the discussion of favorites and memorable films from years past – particularly among the incredible volunteers and sponsors who help make the evening happen.  Last year it was the crocodile and a situation that was hard to shake.  Before that it might be the crazy base jumping film, or even the caribou migrating to Anwar NWR, or the guy who walked across Australia.
We have staff still chuckling about some of the lighter moments, like the search and rescue cats, or the guys that approached backyard trampolines with an out-of-bounds elite climber-type intensity.  You hear it in the audience too – from the collective gasps, or the applause response – and you have a hint which ones will stick.
The Banff Mountain Film festival is our largest annual fundraising event, bringing in much-needed funds to help pay for land protection and restoration projects throughout the year.  Dollars raised come from event ticket sales, raffle tickets, sponsor donations, and, new this year, a special Nevada Land Trust membership promotion the night of the event.  Look for details on the tables and at the NLT booth – and take a moment to meet some of the artists that will be featured at the July art event!
This year we are adding a new VIP reception for Banff sponsors and VIP ticket holders from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in Pavilion A on the second floor of John Ascuaga’s Nugget.  VIP tables are located directly in front of the Nugget Rose Ballroom’s largest video screen.  In addition to the premier center seating, VIP ticket holders will enjoy drinks and hearty hors d'oeuvres and a special display of winning photos from the 2012 Banff Mountain Photography Competition – the first time we’ve brought it in.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival, a program of The Banff Centre, is the largest, and one of the most prestigious, mountain festivals in the world. Hot on the heels of the festival held every fall in Banff, Alberta, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour hits the road. With stops planned in about 390 communities and 35 countries across the globe, this year's tour features a collection of the most inspiring action, environmental, and adventure films from the festival.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival event is Nevada Land Conservancy's largest annual fundraiser. Established in 1998, the Nevada Land Conservancy is a private, non-profit land trust dedicated to preserving and protecting Nevada's open spaces and special places for future generations. As the state's first "Nevada-Born" land trust, the Conservancy meets open space needs by working closely with area landowners, businesses, environmental organizations, and public officials. Kadoma - USA, 2011, 42 minutes
Focus: Exploration, Kayaking. Best Film - Exploration and Adventure, Sponsored by Nemo. "Kadoma" is the nickname for Hendri Coetzee, a legendary South African kayaker who is known for exploring some of Africa's wildest rivers. In December 2010, American pro kayakers Chris Korbulic and Ben Stookesbury followed Coetzee into the Democratic Republic of Congo for a first descent of the dangerous Lukuga River. Seven weeks into the expedition, tragedy struck.
